Using FTP on Windows

KU has instructions on how to use a FTP program to connect to a web server located here. However, they are slightly outdated and point to a commercial software product (one that costs money). So I outline a free FTP program below.

Download FileZilla, a free FTP program, here !!This is a new revised link that actually works.!! Click on the image to start the download.

Double click on the setup program to set up, and then load the installed program. Once FileZilla is running,

  1. Click on the File->Site Manager button
  2. Click the "New Site" button
  3. Under host, enter your host info -- probobly people.ku.edu
  4. Leave the Port setting alone.
  5. Check the "nomal" logintype button
  6. Enter your username/password in the proper fields
  7. Hit connect.
FileZilla is a bit slow, so don't worry if things don't happen at once.

To move a file, navigate to the folder containing the file you want to move, and the destination directory. Then, drag the file over from the source to the destination folders.
