Elan Assignment

This assignment will introduce you to the use of the Elan transcription program and the qanform set of programs. After you transcribe the recording of Noah and his mother in Elan, complete the following steps:

1. Export the file as a Tab-delimited Text to a textfile named Noah. Use the single column format.

2. Import the Tab-delimited data from the textfile Noah.txt to Excel.

3. Sort the data in Excel using the columns with the begin and end times as the sort criteria. Sort in the ascending order.

4. Delete the columns with the time information.

5. Copy the remaining columns (the names and the utterances) to Notepad (or any word processing program).

6. Use the search and replace function in Notepad to convert the file to the qanform format, e.g.

N(oah)

M(ommy)

N Yeah, it was rain all day.

 = Yeah, it was raining all day.

M raining?

7. Save this file as Noahqan.

8. Run the qanform program.

      The name of the input file (archivo) is noahqan.txt

      The code for the child (niño) is N

9. Qanform will produce an output file named NOAHQAN.OUT

10. Run the qanmluex program and select the first option (lexical analysis).

      The name of the input file (archivo) is noahqan.out

      Name the output file noahqan.lex

      The code for the child (niño) is N

11. Select the second option (mlu analysis) and run the qanmluex program again.

      The name of the input file is noahqan.out

      Name the output file noahqan.mlu

      The code for the child (niño) is N

12. Exit the qanmluex program.

13. Open Excel and import data from the files noahqan.lex and noahqan.mlu to separate worksheets. Use the delimited option and choose the semicolon as the delimiter.

14. Save the Excel spreadsheet with Noah’s data as yourname (fill in your name).
