Study Questions on Words, Word Meaning and Pragmatics

The questions on the first exam will be similar to the practice exercises at the end of the chapters in the textbook. You should be familiar enough with the linguistic terminology that was discussed in class to be able to match the key terms listed at the end of each chapter with their definitions and to work the problems. I recommend looking over the following practice exercises:

Date

Topic

Exercises

Jan. 17

The Science of Language

Chapter 1 questions on p. 30 and 31

Jan. 24

Words

File 4.1; File 9.5 - What is a processing model?

Jan. 31

Word Meaning

File 6.1 & 6.2 and #21, 31 and 32

Feb. 7

Pragmatics

File 7.1, 7.2 & 7.5

Feb. 14

The Sounds in Words

The first exam will not cover this material

There will also be one or two questions about the homework exercises that you turned in. For example, what is the difference between an inflectional and derivational morpheme? How would you establish the prototypical features of cups? What is a word?

The exam will be an open book, open note exam. I will not test your ability to repeat definitions of basic terms, but will test your ability to use linguistic terms to analyze language.
